Everything old is new again

Even though we are well into the first decade of the 21st century, fashion seems to continue to take its cues from the past. The past being the recent past--post-World War II--in relative terms to the earth's four-billion-year age. Still, there continues to be news in fashion--both apparel and fine jewelry. Despite the dearth of items, a multitude of color directions, and no clean vision on what length a necklace ought to be, there was plenty of newness--and direction--to be found in the jewelry stands at this year's shows in Basel and Las Vegas.

Some of this new direction may be more subtle, but it will be more evident as consumers begin shopping for their fall wardrobes. The good news is that the more tailored silhouettes and "age appropriate" clothes offer more opportunity to accessorize.

Many designer lines showed simpler, more elegant clothing, reminiscent of the ladylike wear that harkens back to the days of Camelot, when a young Jacqueline Kennedy caught Americans' attention to sophisticated dressing. Even Marc Jacobs, the designer who trumpeted the "grunge look," showed demure, feminine, and "grown-up" fashions, which would look good on a woman of 20 or a woman of 60. This new formality in clothing is a welcome relief from the hype and hippiness that has pervaded fashion since the late 1990s.
