Sometimes following super hip fashion trends feels like we're watching a really jumbled up episode of Quantum Leap, or better, one of this season's Lost episodes. For awhile, we were stuck in the 80's, then we warp back to the early 90's for a few months, and now rumor has it that we're headed back to the psychedelic 60's. Trippy tees, day-glow colors, and yes -- maybe even bell bottoms -- are in some forecasts for summer '09.

While it's true that the 60s are probably the one decade that never fully goes out of style, the turn-back towards acid-soaked music and fashion of the late 60s and early 70s is showing up in a variety of lineups.

The most noticeable place, of course, is the rehashing of the bell bottom. Then there are designers like Pierre Cardin, who has been showing off some very spaced-out designs for his summer/autumn 2009 collection.

According to Brandish, the trick is pulling off the nuanced hippie look with a few psychedelic accents like day-glow bandannas, beatle boots, or even a freaky tee. Then, play it down with something more grounded so people know you're being ironic.

Celebrate spring with sexy Sirup

Spring will be celebrated by the boho-girls and pirate-chicks in a beautiful, feminine and funky collection from the Danish fashion brand Sirup. A trip on the seven seas and then off to Woodstock. This is how to describe the Spring 2009 colletion from Sirup.

Danish fashion label Noir to make its Dubai debut

At last some refreshing news for fashionistas. Since fashion designers got busy with designing residences/clubs, our wardrobes have been feeling a bit neglected. Not all is lost though as the cutting-edge Danish brand Noir has just announced its plans to make its international debut with a stand-alone store in Dubai. The eco-conscious brand founded by Dane Peter Ingwersen three years ago has been generating rave reviews among the fashion-forward set. Eco-conscious because the label sources its materials from sustainable businesses in developing countries such as Uganda.

However, don’t mistake organic for lack-lustre. Like its slightly sinister name suggests, Noir’s range that is ‘fetish meets precision-tailoring’, oozes oomph from every single stitch. Ingwersen describes it as “meaningful luxury.”

Robots as Runway Models

Nowadays modeling is one of the most thrilling profession. Modeling is where educational qualities insignificant, while physical and personal qualities gain utmost importance. Mostly, young people both male and female who has the perfect qualities to be a runway model are being chase by fashion agents to be a runway model. Now, not only humans are being used as a runway model but also humanoids have come to enter the fashion world and used as a runway model. A new talking and walking female fashion robot which can also smile is to make a debut at a fashion show in Tokyo.

Researchers at the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology in Japan has developed a cybernetic human that is programed to be a fashion model. This humanoid is designed with a look of an average Japanese woman, weighing 95 pounds, 62.2 inches tall, with a petite silver and black body, small nose on the fair skinned face and has shoulder length black hair. Sharp eyebrows arch over the slightly oversized eyes. It has a feminine look and is currently code named as 'HRP-4C'.

During the demonstration, the robot walked out, and said "Hello" in a feminine voice. It closely resembles a woman in gait and behavior and can also interact with people using speech recognition. Idea of the robot was envisioned in 2006, and took three years of time to materialize. The main purpose of its creation is to utilize in the entertainment industry and in fashion shows.

Plans are contemplated to debut the robot in the runway for a catwalk as a fashion model at the Tokyo Fashion Week. Its body parts are made precisely small enough, and with slim legs to give an appearance of a female model. It would be exciting to see a hot looking woman robot marching down on the ramp, and catch the eyes of android fans. The robot accomplished fairly well in posing for the cameras during the trail run. It also performed model actions like smiling appealingly, and luring the audience with its seductive poses, and sulky pouts. Mere enough qualifications for a top model.

As the news hit of yet another men's publication closing down, a new men's style bible is born in its place. Maxim, the unabashed lad's must-read for pin-up girls lightly mixed with men's fashion, sport and news this week confirmed the steep drop in circulation and sales led to it's folding. New on the shelves is Geil Magazine, a Berlin-based lifestyle publication aimed at the metrosexual male, hoping to lure some of the readers seeking more international fashion over scantily dressed girls and fast cars.

Geil's debut issue features ample fashion stories covering international designers and trends from around the globe. It also covers art, travel, lifestyle and the season's must-have gadgets and to-do list. We love the enhanced grooming pages which reflect the growing beauty industry for men and it's refreshing to see a more versatile product range than just your average moisturiser and shaving gel.

Geil, in the German lexicon, translates into "horny", but is used in a frivolous way. Geil Magazine is about what turns you on, be it music, clothes, cars or scantily clad boys. Perhaps the gay element is a little too evident in its debut issue and not to everone's taste, however the percentage of fashion and credible styling will surely offer competition to your average men's style publication.

Fashion colors trends for season 2009

Clearly, the yellow color is one of the 2009 year, to ignore the bad press associated with it bad luck. The company Pantone, an authority in the world of color, has confirmed that the color Pantone 14-0848, known as “mimosa”, the color will be marked as a trend this year, 2009.

"I think it's simply wonderful symbolic color of the future," said Leatrice Eisemna, executive director of Pantone Color Institute. "It is invariably connected to the heat, sunshine and joy, all the good things we are very needy."

The color stands out for its warmth, is a reddish yellow synonymous with hope and optimism. The yellow becomes the protagonist in a season in which innovation and imagination are essential, says Eisemna.

"The yellow exemplifies the warmth of the sun and light yellow talks because it is a tone that radiates imagination and innovation." The more yellow "quiet", to describe in some way is different to that used in previous collections, where the yellow stronger prevailed.

It is a tone that radiates imagination and innovation a clear example of the role of color is found in the parades of Louis Vuitton, Ossie Clark, Christopher Kane, etc ... In the spring fashion collections made known in early fall for retailers and publishers, yellow walkways brightened by Carolina Herrera, who appointed his favorite color marigold, as well as Badgley Mischka, Za Posen and Michael Kors, among others. Kors included circles with a yellow bikini that clearly went back to a happier time.

General trends in 2009

At the end of all the gateways of clothing and accessories for 2009, and the trends that were developed in 2008, can be anticipated in some fashion trends for 2009, either for autumn-winter 2009 or spring-summer 2009.

Regarding shoes, platforms are the most used. The shoes come in itself an incredible variety of formats and options, perhaps the most notable trend is the shoes "drafts", or with many openings and strips. They also come adorned with ruffles and fringes. Fashion boots are long, even above the knee or the spoils.

Regarding coats, leopard prints are also a very strong trend. With leopard printed scarves are still using.

Dresses continue the trend of 2008, the Greek or Roman silhouettes, and some original textiles: butterfly prints, suitable for spring and summer. There is no dominant trend in the colors of clothing. The leggings are still used, but this time with the option for black latex.

With regard to accessories, the jewelry is proposed with large dimensions. The belts also become important dimensions, big buckles and ornaments very striking.

Small leather jackets are also used widely, especially to accompany dresses. Boho chic style or vintage will be one of the important trends. Maxi bags are still trend.

Tokyo Style From Copenhagen

We love the latest collection of t-shirts from 1206 in Denmark, another of our favorite Scandinavian design collectives. The Spellbound collection, their third collection, has been inspired by images of dreams and nightmares:

Since their inception, 1206 have somehow managed to span the thousands of miles between their two inspirational homes, Scandinavia and Japan. Annhagen love black. Actually that’s not strictly correct, they also happen to love white and grey, but it wouldn’t have made such a good opening line. Apart from creating beautiful clothes Noir’s vision has also led them to create a new cotton fabric brand called Illuminati II with the intention of producing a new luxury fabric from raw African cotton for use by leading luxury fashion brands around the world. More importantly their initiative has led to the establishment of the Noir Foundation, a fund that allocates a high percentage of revenue from sales to support the African cotton workers as part of the Proud Harvest supply chain. By providing essential medicine and micro loans, the so-called Humane Business Model provides much needed support where it is required the most.

Miss Stella's Feeling For Fashion

Danish fashion brand Stella Nova we were reminded of one of our favorite pieces of Scandinavian fiction “Frøken Smillas fornemmelse for sne” (Miss Smilla’s feeling for snow). And that provides a rather feeble excuse to recommend in passing the novels of Danish writer Peter Høeg. More on his work (some essential Scandinavian reading) at a later date.

Stella Nova was founded in 2002 with the declaration of the rather bold intention “to inspire and create joy in everyday life through the development of an accessible range of designs for women who want to make a difference.” Since the company’s growth in 2008 is predicted to be more than 50% it seems as if Stella Nova is more than living up to its mission.

Intriguingly, inspiration for the brand comes from the imaginary character of Stella Nova and the universe she inherits. A universe seemingly filled with love, unpredictability, eccentricity and strictness. In reality, the company is run by co-owners Trine Skoller (Creative Director) and Henrik Spandet-Møller (CEO) together with over 20 dedicated colleagues in beautifully preserved townhouse in the centre of Copenhagen.

Exemplary Danish Fashion

Launched back in 2001, the Danish fashion brand Eksempel have quickly become one of lifeiscarbon®'s Scandinavian fashion favorites. Radiating an understated elegance permeated by an air of contemporary aesthetic thought, Pernille Winther (designer and founder of Eksempel) creates sophisticated yet highly wearable designs with her extraordinary working of pattern and cut, combined with her poetic sense of fabric and silhouette.

Eksempel presented its first solo runway show during last month’s Copenhagen Fashion Week. Opening quietly with light silk tunic dresses predominately in black but building to a riotous close featuring harmonious multi-colored graphic silhouettes, successfully contrasting plaster white, ochre yellow, mid-tone grey and vibrant purple. In between, Winther proposed a modern and poetic way of visualizing the female form, demonstrating that she is a designer more interested in loose fits and casual styling than tight, sleek body conscious dressing.

Tunic inspired silhouettes may not be particularly new but Eksempel’s AW08 collection somehow feels very current, with a timeless and highly wearable quality to it. "The foundation for each new collection is the previous collection," Winther explained. "My designs are not meant to be seasonal, but classic statements to be used across seasons".

2009 Menswear Trend: Goth Ninja

Goth Ninja/Batman meets Rick Owens/Dorian Gray meets Damir Doma/Japanese rock star, whatever you call it, it's hot and it's growing.

One of the biggest yet somehow underground driven trends in the last couple of years has been the Goth Ninja; and it's growing as a fashion trend in 2009. The figure hugging, black clad youths are perhaps the biggest consumers of the lesser celebrated designers. They've moved away from most big name Parisian and Milanese designers and reverted back to the Antwerp six and most recently the Tokyo 6 (or was it 7 or 8? I stopped counting after Mihara Yasuhiro).

Its origins are a little bit ambiguous but it seems to be a combination of a misconception of Japanese street wear and self made "waywt" celebrities. This makes it all the more interesting as it may not have necessarily been started out by any one designer or collection. Perhaps the closest one would be Takahiro Miyashita's Number (N)ine A/W 2006. The look has even been picked up by international celebrities such as Big Bang, and umm... well maybe more if the Sartorialist went to a Manifest exhibition which I'm sure would make the look more popular.

To the untrained eye they would definitely look stylish with no obvious logos showing but on closer inspection you would be looking at a full blown label whore. A typical outfit would demonstrate one's fashion knowledge displaying particular attention to design and detail with an expert ability to mix and match. Most outfits would consist of a basic tee from American Apparel, layered with an Ann Demeulemeester top; perhaps a Rick Owens knit and an Undercover or Martin Margiela coat. Bottoms are less daring with the elusive and figure hugging Dior Homme 17 cm jeans or a looser Comme Des Garcons drop-crotch. Throw in a Balenciaga The Day bag or a Louis Vuitton Shopper, some cheap silver accessories, a pair of very expensive Number (N)ine worn leather boot and there you have it. The look is raw, deconstructed, extremely modern but yet very controlled and still very masculine.

Fortunately you wouldn't find them rolling in pigeon blood at Flinders Street Station in Melbourne, nor would you see them running around with a samurai sword. They'd most likely be located outside of a Chanel store, distracted with stalking their female equivalents. This perhaps makes it easier to clobber them on their heads and run off with 10K worth of goods. Kidding.

Ball Gowns on the Bowery

If the social scene has lost some of its luster due to the economy, you wouldn't have known it Friday at the annual masked ball thrown by Save Venice, the New York-based organization that has raised more than $20 million to restore over 350 works of art and architecture in Italy's famed canal city. Sure, tickets were less expensive this year and it was cocktails at the Bowery Hotel rather than dinner at Cipriani, but the aesthetics were all intact: Antony Todd had transformed the hotel's outdoor patio into a Venetian palazzo, and thanks to fashion sponsor Cho Cheng, there was plenty of lace and flounce. In fact, there was even a bit of dress drama: Frock watchers who remembered Tinsley Mortimer wearing a giant pink Cheng gown to the Met Ball in 2005 were shocked—shocked!—to see a reveler show up in the same look at this party.

Fall 2009 Legwear Trend: Decoration Day

Glam gams have been all the rage for a few seasons now. But this fall, a greater number of labels pushed the limits of legwear design — and “more is more” seems to be their mantra. “Who needs another pair of basics?” asked designer Jillian Lewis. Her labor-intensive paneled tights were initially developed as a costume for dance performers, and now they’re among the most popular pieces in her fall collection. “They’ve been in such demand since the presentation,” she says. At Cynthia Rowley, where a recent partnership with the United Legwear Company has created a surge in hosiery offerings, a pair of embellished fan-print tights were stunners on the runway. “People talk of risk in this environment,” says Peter Arnold, president at Cynthia Rowley, “but fashion offers an escape. There always needs to be an element of fantasy.” And there certainly is in hose. United Legwear is even producing a slick set of tights decorated with heat-transferred nail heads for the company.

The season’s elaborate legwear may not be for the faint of heart, and with bells and whistles like Swarovski accents and Italian leather patches, the prices certainly aren’t for the shallow of pocket. Michael Angel’s pair of crystal-decorated leggings will set customers back $395 at retail, while at Diesel Black Gold, Renzo Rosso’s patchwork leggings will go for $550. And Lewis’ cut-and-sewn leggings will retail for a whopping $695. “Yeah, they’re expensive,” she acknowledges. “But the psychology today is, when it comes to opening our wallets, it better be worth it.”
