Traditionally the territory of hippies, eco-clothing is becoming big business as people all over the planet start to take more interest in the planet. Organic foods has already become a mainstream product genre available in just about every grocery store, and eco-friendly clothing is on the verge of making the same impact. Most organic fabric today is organic cotton, which drives the eco-clothing trend, with continuously growing sales expected to reach more than $2 billion.

Fashion designers are also innovating with eco-friendly fabrics made of soy, corn, hemp and even bamboo. Not just dinner for pandas anymore, bamboo is making a mark as the newest eco-clothing trend. Bamboo, the fastest growing plant in the world, is more ecological than organic cotton and softer than organic silk. In fact, bamboo is expected to become a popular eco-clothing trend over the next few years, because it is 100% biodegradable and does not require fertilizers and pesticides, and is considered by many to be the most ecological fabric.

In the end the eco-clothing trend may take off as a self-fulfilling prophecy – because it is “trendy”. Whatever the reason, no one can argue the eco-clothing can have a positive impact on the environment.

Danish fashion label Noir to make its Dubai debut

At last some refreshing news for fashionistas. Since fashion designers got busy with designing residences/clubs, our wardrobes have been feeling a bit neglected. Not all is lost though as the cutting-edge Danish brand Noir has just announced its plans to make its international debut with a stand-alone store in Dubai. The eco-conscious brand founded by Dane Peter Ingwersen three years ago has been generating rave reviews among the fashion-forward set. Eco-conscious because the label sources its materials from sustainable businesses in developing countries such as Uganda.

However, don’t mistake organic for lack-lustre. Like its slightly sinister name suggests, Noir’s range that is ‘fetish meets precision-tailoring’, oozes oomph from every single stitch. Ingwersen describes it as “meaningful luxury.”

Style With A Conscience

What’s not to love about the Danish eco-fashion label Noir? Starkly monochromatic and sharply tailored collections designed to satisfy consumers with a social as well as a fashion conscience.

Apart from creating beautiful clothes Noir’s vision has also led them to create a new cotton fabric brand called Illuminati II with the intention of producing a new luxury fabric from raw African cotton for use by leading luxury fashion brands around the world. More importantly their initiative has led to the establishment of the Noir Foundation, a fund that allocates a high percentage of revenue from sales to support the African cotton workers as part of the Proud Harvest supply chain. By providing essential medicine and micro loans, the so-called Humane Business Model provides much needed support where it is required the most.
As if all of this wasn’t enough, Noir happens to be a member of the U.N. Global Compact adhering to human rights, labour safety, environment and anti-corruption politics and is also affiliated with The International Labour Organization.

Noir is the brainchild of Peter Ingwersen who was previously a Brand Manager for Levi’s RED and Levi’s Vintage before becoming a Managing Director at Day, Birger et Mikkelsen (another successful Danish fashion brand).

We love the way that Noir have treated the cotton they use to create what they call cotton couture. Specially treated cottons including a coated cotton that gives the impression of rubber, a honeycomb cotton with sculptural qualities and cotton silks with a luxurious feel.
