Peter Pilotto Fall 2009 RTW Collection

Pilotto is one of those whose thoughts have turned, this season, to the massive, fundamental events of natural history. He and his partner, Christopher De Vos, an ex-Vivienne Westwood designer, say they've been working around "the awe and wonder of the big bang theory, an optimistic new beginning. Designers(designer toej) Peter Pilotto and Christopher De Vos splashed their signature colorful prints over short silk jersey dresses, blouses and skirts. They turned to rock crystal shapes, kaleidoscopic shards, and an artist’s tiny paintbrush daubs for print inspiration, and relied on strong colors such as cobalt blue, lava red, and coal.

Mark Fast Fall 2009 RTW Collection

designer toej

Mark Fast, one of the designers(designer toej) who passed the rigors of the New Generation selection committee this season. This collection sealed the designer's growing reputation for knitwear expertise. Standouts were a pink metallic, textured minidress made of strips that wound across the body, and a black crocheted mini-dress with skirts that swung with wool fringing.

Josh Goot Fall 2009 RTW Collection

Josh Goot is the third designer(designer toej) in London to mention geology as his inspiration. Where Marios Schwab and Graeme Black looked at mineral deposits, Goot was thinking of "the organic lines of stone, and cutting and chiseling it. Knits formed the centerpiece of the Josh Goot collection, some in graphic swirls of black and cream and others etched with curvy lines.

House of Holland Fall 2009 RTW Collection

designer toej

Designer(designer toej) Henry Holland’s fall collection for House of Holland was made up of simple separates that came in luxe knits and silks. And there were stripes everywhere: Even a fluffy Tibetan lamb wool coat came in gray, white and black ones. To the most partisan crowd of London fashion week, who shrieked with glee at every passage, he offered up a full-tilt paean to Pantone. So Aggy was on first in a jacket, skinny pants, tights, and shoes, each item striped with different tones of green banded with white. Then came purple, pink, turquoise, and on and on.

Louise Goldin Fall 2009 RTW collection

designer toejDesigner(designer toej) Louise Goldin describes her style in three words which is innovative, futuristic and luxurious and what inspires her is Eskimos, the Arctic and Mars. The collection she showed was entirely in black, which was a pity though only in that it wasn't possible to make out exactly what she was up to, even in close-up. Essentially, it was long-lined silhouettes of knit sliced with black leather, as well as an evolution into fur in a few fierce jackets that took her pieces to luxury level.

Danielle Scutt Fall 2009 RTW Collection

designer toej

Danielle Scutt’s overtly feminine/masculine collection consists of chiffon dresses, trench coats, boiler suits, jersey dresses, separates, denim, organza suits, swimwear, jewellery, belts and sunglasses. What stood out from the collection was the form-fitting jersey and chiffon dresses in her signature black-and-white animal print slashed with silver zippers, and another dress that shimmered with mirror-like shards.

Christopher Kane Fall 2009 RTW Collection

Kane can apparently do no wrong either technically or in the eyes of the audience he's attracting, whatever the cost of the handcrafting involved. What he achieved in appliquéing this collection's stripes on organza, making the geometry intersect in blocks or spiral around skirts and sometimes break into vertical ripples in hemlines is extraordinary. He took the edge off stiff, silk-paneled dresses with black velvet ribbons, and tossed plaid cashmere sweaters over equally rigid skirts. Hemlines were adorned with sculpted ruffles or rigid, wavy edging.

Aquascutum Fall 2009 RTW Collection

designer toejDesigner(designer toej) Michael Herz made his best argument for cross-generational accessibility in the rainwear, Aquascutum's original claim to fame. Outerwear stole the show in this luscious collection. Trench coats came adorned with fur or lace collars and coats boasted the richest of details, including contrasting lining, crocheted pockets and hoods, and even embroidery.

Kinder Aggugini Fall 2009 RTW Collection

Designer ToejThere was a Savile Row spirit to this collection, which boasted razor-sharp tailoring, rich hues and military silhouettes. Aggugini, who once worked on the Row, sent out riding coats in lipstick pink. Aggugini is an Italian designer(designer toej) who fell in love with British street style of the late seventies and early eighties, got himself into Central Saint Martins, and since then has worked his way around fashion via a bespoke tailoring gig at Huntsman in Savile Row and studio jobs at Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, and Versace.

Graeme Black fall 2009 RTW Collection

Designer ToejThis season, designer(designer toej) Graeme Black collection evolved at the London Natural History Museum and ending up in the mineral room. That detour prompted curviform shapes, marbled prints, and internal textures vaguely suggesting crystals. The silhouettes—basically Poiret wraps over short, fitted dresses—didn't vary much, and might prove awkward for anyone with less-than-perfect legs.

His luxurious collection was richly detailed, including hand-painted cashmere or pony skin on coats; crystal studs and beading in linings; and rosettes of orylag fur on vests.

Ralph Lauren Designer Loafers

Polo Ralph LaurenRalph Lauren's latest luxurious holiday offering for men is an ultra-stylish take on the classic Italian driving loafer. The shoes are finished in brilliantly-hued genuine alligator skin and embellished with equestrian hardware. The Garda Alligator Driver is named after Northern Italy's chic Lake Garda resort, where scenes from the latest James Bond movie, Quantum of Solace, were filmed.

Alexandre Herchcovitch 2009 Fall RTW Collection

The collection is much more complicated to describe than it was to take in; despite all the bells and whistles, it was designed with a light hand. Floral silk dresses in a rich red were bedazzled with beads and paired with striped, sequined leggings that were worn throughout the show, then jackets and tops in varying lengths were piled on. But rather than seeming overloaded, each outfit looked modern and right.

Ralph Lauren iPhone Application

Ralph Lauren launched his iPhone application which lets you see all the latest styles available in stores and watch clips from fashion week. There are even backstage galleries and a lookbook. Another exciting feature of this application is the "Portraits of a Collection," which shows you an inside look at Ralph Lauren's work and art; narrated in part by the designer himself. There's also a world-wide store locater.

Badgley Mischka 2009 RTW Collection

What Badgley and his designer(designer toej) partner, James Mischka, are about, recession or no, is great-looking dresses with a healthy dose of straight-up glamour speaking of which, they are currently hard at work on two Oscar gowns.

A liquid-gold velvet that fell into a seductive low-necked cowl; eye-popping satins; and a slinky allover-sequin column, surely headed for a chanteuse near you. An asymmetrical frock with a sideways drape ending in a chunk of ruffles was too tricky, but overall this was a solid collection. Strongest, in fact, were looks with a modicum of austerity, like a one-shoulder, smoke-hued gown on Bruna Tenorio. With its strategic flutter of ruffles, it was easily the most elegant thing around.

Tracy Reese 2009 RTW Collection

Tracy Reese worked a schoolgirl vibe for fall, adding nerdy specs knit caps, and knee-socks to most of her looks. Dresses fun, flirty, and uncomplicated came in shades of saffron, mauve, and rose, and could be styled just as easily for a campus as for a beach resort during winter break. That adaptability is one of the strengths of Reese's brand; she may not be forging new territory, but her pieces have a wear-anywhere quality and enough thoughtful details to make them appealing.

Cynthia Rowley 2009 RTW Collection

Cynthia Rowley is approaching the recession with a glass-half-full mentality. For Fall, the designer(designer toej) put her focus on accessories including crystal-encrusted leg wear, slouchy leather boots, and carved onyx necklaces that can be worn to update a woman's existing wardrobe.

Believing that shoppers are also in the market for more artisanal wares, Rowley took a craftier approach with the clothing than she has in seasons past. A blouse done up in rows of ribbons, paired with a brocade miniskirt, had an heirloom feel, and a series of sweet silk dresses were patch worked with Liberty fabrics. While the detailing on some cropped pants felt overly folksy, Rowley's strategy should appeal to her customer come fall.

DKNY 2009 RTW Collection

As tiresome as it's become to view everything through recession-colored glasses, with a smart-priced commercial collection like DKNY, that really is the only appropriate lens. In addition to investing in that one special luxury item this season, the designer customer will want to stretch her dollar like a pair of sample-sale Louboutins. With that in mind, Karan and company built Fall on wearable looks pulled together from top to toe or, more specifically, from funny little felt hat to lace-up spectator bootie, with sleek gloves and a rainbow of oversize envelope clutches and cavernous carryalls in between.

Boy by Band of Outsiders

A new partnership with an Italian mill that produces collections for some of the top Parisian design houses yielded Boy by Band of Outsiders' most serious effort to date. "I used to cut my womenswear pieces from the same fabric I used for the men's," designer(designer toj) Scott Sternberg said at the show. That was clear from today's polished tableau-style presentation, which was inspired by the chic French student revolutionaries in Godard's La Chinoise and featured models slouching against old-fashioned lamp posts or lounging on wrought-iron beds.

Women's Style Report 2009

Designers love fairy-tale dresses, as well as we do. Flouncing ruffles, rosette clusters, and delicate capelets are very womanly and create an absolutely exquisite image.

Grecian Goddess dresses are a thing of beauty; the way they hang, the reams of fabric, the way they make their wearer look so statuesque. They were also a key look at the 2009 Spring/Summer shows and we are now seeing Grecian dresses filter their way through on to the celebrity circuit and the high street.

Introducing the cutaway fashion trend where intricate missing elements of fabric work to show off glimpses of the female figure in a sexual and sensual fashion typical of women's Spring/Summer 2009 fashion.

Women's Current Fashion Trends

Look hot this spring and summer of 2009 by knowing the hottest fashion trends right now....

The past winter has been too cold for everyone. With spring here, and summer around the corner, lots of bright colors are being introduced into our closet. Gone are the days of when we fashionistas were scared of patterns that scream 'we're here! Get used to us!', and many experts expect this trend in women's fashion to continue for a while.

The underlining tone of all of our fashions this year is becoming feminine. You can tell in the bright colors, flowing dresses, and ruffles that women are ready to say 'we're here, we're women, and we look great'. So many women are excited to be able to wear something that's not only fashionable, but so very comfortable. Integrating a maxi dress into your wardrobe means that you're comfortable, and looking amazing.

For the 2009 season, go bold. Go bright. Be a little more adventurous with your fashion. The current trends in women's fashion is, after all, a little out there.

Hester’s Double Happiness

The assumption, when you hear that the designers(designer toej) behind fledgling label Hester are former Men’s Vogue staffers, is that it’s a pet project, launched in their newly freed-up days of unemployment. Wrong. In fact, editors-turned-designers Mauricio Quezada, 25, and Tasha Green, 26, cobbled together their first ten-plus-piece capsule collection for Spring 2009 while still on-staff, popping out during lunch hours to buy zippers and visiting factories before morning meetings. But not having full-time jobs has certainly helped shuttle along Hester’s progress.

The second collection has matured to 12 full looks. It still hews to the two self-described fashion obsessives’ push-pull ethos of “future vintage” classic tailored wools with vinyl piping, polished tops and dresses pieced together with scuba-sleek lines. They chose the name Hester for its dual quality as well, which they call “awkwardly regal.” Though Quezada and Green have dealt with lost jobs and the stress of a navigating a start-up through rough waters, they positively radiate optimism.

Designers Are Honing Their Nesting Instincts

The market crashed two days after Macqua designer(designer toej) Meike Vollmar debuted in New York last September, but unlike the Dow, she's bouncing back and showing here a second season. "In New York, people are open to discovering new things even though there's so much going on," the Berlin-based designer says, explaining her decision to take a second bite at the Big Apple. "I don't want to ignore what's going on in the world," she adds, "but the dreamer in me always comes in, creating a mix between realism and dreaminess." If last season is anything to go by, expect clever variations on minidresses and cropped leather jackets.

Donna Karan PreFall 2009 Collection

Coming off a season of loose drapes and billowy folds, Donna Karan played with structure for pre-fall in a palette of mostly black, red, and white, along with bold jewel tones for after dark. But Karan's idea of structure is easier than most. Day dresses fell in scallops to right above the knees, while the lapels of jackets were ruched and rumpled. And it doesn't get any softer than an ostrich feather and paillette evening chubby.

Vera Wang Lavender Label

Vera Wang has positioned her Lavender Label collection to be as recession-proof as possible. When the designer(designer toej) mentioned prices at the informal presentation she held in her 39th Street showroom on Friday, there were shrieks of joy from the assembled buyers. "It's a bit of mod mixed with medieval, and everything can be mixed and matched," Wang added. Key pieces included a blazer and an armorlike top made from a foam-backed, techno-quilted jersey, and embroidered satin tabards that were more King Street than King Arthur. A new footwear line that includes biker-inspired ankle boots with harnesses and oiled leather brogues, among other options, likewise offers high-end detail and construction at a very friendly price point.

Men's Fashion for Autumn

For the first time a sense of seasonal change in evening air. Certain leaves are beginning to turn fresh inspiration for fashion designers. But don’t think doom and gloom, conversely its cause for celebration, when the autumn leaves start falling, new fashions will be blooming. Fresh styles will be hitting the decks of the high street stores and, the economy willing, shoppers will be out in droves.

The really good news is for men, finally there will be out of ordinary natural enough floral’s to choose from. For the adventurous there are floral suits and some dandy hats, it’s the 70’s all over, a very productive decade for many of the arts, music, style innovation and architecture. And to brighten up any gray autumn skies there will be plenty of men’s jewelery to dress up your outfit.

The line up is impressive, new designers making out an existence along side the rich and famous, but regardless of your position in the industry hierarchy, the essence is in the flower.

Fashionable Short Homecoming Dresses

Designer Clothing Over Low-End Offerings

From talking to friends, colleagues and random pub/bar-associates, it appears that people believe price goes hand-in-hand with quality and this makes up a big influence. Make no mistake, the lower end alternatives are no shabby job, but we would be inclined to agree when they speak of the quality of the designer clothes(designer toej).

Quality of design and build is hugely influential and massively appealing to trendsetters. That's what designer clothing seems to symbolize, but it stands for much more; the influences behind the design of the pieces encompasses music, art, culture and expressionism, without being in the slightest bit pretentious. So if you want to be the first in line, be sure to seek out and shop for some truly inspirational pieces that speak volumes about the things you live and breathe. It's all out there; you just need to know where to look.

Klein and Lauren, No Looking Back

You have to be new in fashion, or you’re on the side. It’s as simple, and as complicated, as that. There may be a recession coming, and you would think that designers would want to create new and desirable looks, but that has not been the story of the fall 2008 collections, which ended on Friday night with Marc Jacobs.

Two exceptions are Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren, and it’s not because they’re big names or anything like that. On Friday morning, dressed in faded jeans, Mr. Lauren offered cool, polished sportswear, drawing on Adirondack lodge style or what must be a very chic log cabin.

There were lean suits and dresses in charcoal cashmere, tailor-made for people looking for quality and a contemporary fit. The collection was also loaded with classics like a long swing skirt in black jersey and elegant shoes and boots in suede and crocodile. This has been a merciless season of ugly shoes. But Mr. Lauren was also fantastical. It was as if the lumberjack plaids, the feathered sequined skirts, a red Mounties jacket and the organza plaid gowns were part of a private house party, in which the guests only slightly bothered to put on evening clothes and instead made use of anything available a blanket, a pheasant’s tail.

Men’s Fashion Takes a Turn on Sophistication

A transformed look on clothing great for both work and casual is paving the way for fresh era of sartorial magnificence. And transforming to sophistication begins with a men classic suit. Such three-piece men suit and vest are offering men the complete new cause to invest in fashion every time. On the other hand, what’s actually new is that men now understand the importance to break up the pieces, as women have done for years now. This allows them to achieve greater adaptability with their appearance and to pull most out of their clothing with fluctuating time.

The attracting color for the season is Grey. Just plain and delicately checked two-button jackets and compatible flat-front pants shape the sleek two-piece men suit is suggested by designer such as Ralph Lauren and others. Strong shoulders, neat strips and trim but not tight fit reignite the business light. A pair suit with dress shirts and ties in the normal manner goes well for corporate looks. All shades of violet, from lilac to deep purple are actually trendy, as are autumnal hues of mustard and burnt orange.

Everything this season has the spirit of being very elegant with fine fabric and featuring and creating classics with a twist.

Giorgio Armani: New Classic

Giorgio Armani's show notes promised an assault on boring tradition, but the presentation itself was nowhere near as aggressive. Softly has been the approach favored by a few designers in the face of the current challenging climate. It came naturally to Armani, whose longtime affection for the plushy hand of velvet was expressed in the way he layered or quilted the fabric, and even cut a pair of self-tying baggy pants. This last item was about as offbeat as the designer got, which was something of a disappointment given some of the flights of eccentricity they had from him recently. There was a coat with a crisscross closing that induced a skirt like flare that felt neo-medieval, but otherwise, Armani is commercially astute enough to know that one item that is selling well right now is the suit, so he gave them a raft of options in his signature style: a natural shoulder, cardigan like ease, trousers with an almost knit like fluidity.

He called his collection "New Classic." A biker jacket in blue knit certainly embodied that idea. And the way Armani used scarves and wraps to supplant ties and shirts suggested a loosey-goosey approach to tradition.

Ralph Lauren: Purple and Black Collection

One stands in awe of the Ralph Lauren offering, even as it expands to devour the fashion universe. For a business that is so huge, there is a reassuring amount of personality in the three men's collections and they're growing more distinctive by the season.

This time around, the same sort of alchemy also applied to the more conservative Purple and Black collections. With Purple, color was the key; paisleys and bright hues were played against tailored pieces. And with the suits, there was a new emphasis on lightness. Ralph's own predilections were evident in trousers tied at the waist with a spotted tie, à la Gary Cooper. True, it was a stylist's touch, but so what, if that inspires you to play with the clothes. Lauren certainly provided plenty to work with.

The Black collection adopted menswear's narrower silhouette some time ago the high armhole, the skinny, flat front pant. The silhouette was emphasized even more when it was shown as a monochrome combination of double breasted suit, shirt, and tie in the same optical blue tone. But for Spring, the tailoring was complemented by an energetic toughness in the accompanying sportswear.
